Have you ever watched a science fiction movie and thought about our world? Have you thought about what you can change, how you can  make an impact on the living planet, and help Mother Nature? Sometimes you just want to help other people make their lives easier than ever. Sometimes you want to bring fresh air to the corporate world, or combine AI and human work. However, translating such a transformative idea into a legally compliant, operational business requires more than just innovation; it demands a supportive and efficient launch platform. For global founders with such high aspirations, the Netherlands consistently ranks among Europe’s most welcoming and helpful countries for launching new ventures. During the process, you don’t even have to be alone. A Dutch Facilitator is there for you and for your company. You don’t have to be alone in the time-consuming, and sometimes demotivating, process of Dutch startup founder permits, financial statements, and business plans. A dedicated Dutch Facilitator is available to guide you and your company through every step of this critical process.

What is a facilitator?

The official translation of the term facilitator is a mentor with a more official role. In other words, the facilitator is the legal supporter and helper of you and your business from the beginning. Facilitators are key players in the Dutch startup ecosystem, acting as strategic partners, advisors, and mentors. They evaluate startup potential and help founders navigate operational, financial, and growth challenges. There are also some legal requirements to becoming a facilitator. One of the important requirements is that a facilitator needs to have at least two years of experience in guiding startups. They also need to agree to a business plan for your startup. Their support is developed for the sector your business is in. All facilitators in the Netherlands need to be recognized by the RVO (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency).

Legal Obligations and Conditions of Facilitator:

  • Must have experience in guiding innovative startups

  • Must be financially stable, not bankrupt or in receivership, with no negative equity

  • May not hold a majority interest in the startup company

  • May not be a family member up to the third degree (child, parent, grandparent, or aunt/uncle of the entrepreneur)

Do I have to work with a Facilitator for my startup?

Yes, if you are a non-EU citizen, you have to work with a facilitator for your first year. Under the supervision of a skilled facilitator, you must create or launch a novel good or service during this time. Since facilitators help applicants with requirements, compliance advice, and interactions with authorities, a startup's relationship with its facilitator can have a direct impact on the success of its visa application. Within the Dutch startup ecosystem, facilitators also act as strategic partners, providing mentorship, operational guidance, and connections to resources.

What does a facilitator do for startup visa applicants?

Working with a business mentor is one of the requirements for the Netherlands' startup residence permit. The facilitator and the startup must sign a formal agreement to formalize this partnership. By making sure all paperwork is accurate and complies with Dutch laws, they assist founders in navigating the IND startup visa process. Facilitators must fulfill the legal requirements set forth by the Dutch government, which include serving as an authorized sponsor and upholding appropriate administrative supervision.
